f2.8 @ 1/80 sec. ISO 1600. Canon 5D Mark II with Lensbaby.
I like this one for a few reasons. I like it because it’s very different from what I normally do. I like it because it reflects some of my influences (Renoir and David Hamilton) even when my own work typically doesn’t show it. I like it because it reflects a side of Jack that seems demure. I like it because I get to know something in this image that you don’t: that despite the proper appearance, the dress is in fact quite see through.
Anyways, Jack has posted a few from this set on her blog. When I get around to it, I’ll reblog them — although I suspect most of you follow both of us.

The saints held our hands before the crowd and led us over a bridge the PTA parents made especially for the graduation. Everyone was so proud of us. But then, in the kitchen, they placed our open palms in a pan sitting on a warming stove burner and told us there was nothing in the world. The saints shook the diploma from my hand and kicked it underneath the stove. We stood in a line and they placed each of our hands in the burning pan and shook our arms, telling us there was nothing in the world.

black and white: 19 and 20 of 76

(These two images are kind of boring I guess. But they’re also really important. At one  point while putting together this book, I had entertained the idea of having hand written captions for all the photos. I even borrowed a Wacom tablet and practiced! But I found that not every picture demanded a caption, and that I was forcing it. But these two. For the first I had written: “These were dark days—I had forgotten how to love you—but these windows were so adamant with their light.” And the second one said, “These days the light was perfect. And I remembered how to love you, from half way across the world.”)

Wist(ful). With @tremblingadored.
Jack is both a good friend and an excellent supporter. I always appreciate her kind words. I’ll confess that it is often a fine line between being honest and sounding petulant. Feel free to let me know if I ever cross that line. Also no one should ever feel obligated to comment or give feedback. It’s always appreciated but I think I’m big enough to not pack in my marbles and go home otherwise. For all the feedback back I’ve gotten, thank you. I appreciate it.
Tumblr is interesting though. Beauty Shooter has commented about the tension between those who create and those who curate on Tumblr. Ruzz laments about the contributory nature of Tumblr to the decline of true female empowerment.
As for me? Here’s the thing — I generally follow two kinds of tumblogs: those of people I’d like to get to know / do know and those of creators. I have a real reluctance to reblog posts unless I feel I need to comment on the post or it’s something I think really should be shared. Mostly I want to contribute to the creation of new imagery rather than the repurposing of existing ideas. And there are times I think what a wonderful thing we have where the barriers to publishing creative works have been all but demolished. But I fear that amidst the constant repurposing and retransmitting, new and original voices are being lost. And there are times when I think it’s just high school, all over again. I have yet to resolve all of this in my head. But one cannot contribute to the solution without participating.
So see you next time.
